Burnout among healthcare professionals runs both broad and deep. Numerous studies in the past decade show that nearly half of all physicians and one-third of nurses report at least some of the symptoms of severe burnout syndrome, if not all of them. The three classic symptoms of burnout are emotional exhaustion (feeling drained and hopeless), depersonalization (becoming detached and uncaring), and reduced accomplishment (feeling as if what you are doing isn’t helpful and doesn’t matter).

Even if you are not at the point of burnout, physicians and other caregivers are not immune to stress; in fact, rates of stress in healthcare professions are increasing as well. An emerging body of literature and research in neuroplasticity is demonstrating that practices of mindfulness, including meditation, yoga, heart coherence and time in nature, significantly improve feelings of resilience and decrease stress, anxiety, and depression.

In fact, ciénega is a Spanish term meaning ‘desert marsh,’ in which slow-moving water flows through dense vegetation – making it an ideal home for a diverse range of plants and wildlife.
